Self-publishing on Amazon KDP puts you in control of your book — but a smooth launch starts long before you click “Publish.” Here are five things to have ready.

1. A fully edited manuscript

Typos and inconsistencies are the fastest way to earn poor reviews. Get at least one professional edit and a final proofread before formatting.

2. A cover built for your genre

Your cover is your book’s first impression, and it must read clearly even as a small thumbnail. Paperbacks also need a full wrap with spine and back cover sized to your page count.

3. Properly formatted interior files

Print books need a PDF with correct trim size and margins; ebooks need a reflowable file. Clean formatting makes your book feel professional on every device.

4. A compelling book description

Your description is your sales pitch. Hook readers in the first line, hint at the stakes, and end with a reason to buy now.

5. Keywords and categories

The right keywords and categories help readers discover your book. Think about the words your ideal reader would actually type into Amazon’s search bar.
