You’ve finished your manuscript. Maybe it took months, maybe years. Now comes the question every new author faces: how do I actually get this book into readers’ hands?
Publishing can seem complicated, but it follows a clear set of steps. This guide walks you through each one, from a finished draft to a book people can buy.
Step 1: Choose Your Publishing Path
There are two main routes:
Traditional publishing. You pitch your book to literary agents, who then pitch it to publishing houses. If a publisher accepts it, they handle editing, design, printing, and distribution, and pay you royalties. The upside is credibility and no upfront cost. The downside is that it’s very competitive, can take years, and you give up a lot of creative control and income.
Self-publishing. You publish the book yourself through platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), IngramSpark, or Draft2Digital. You keep control over your content, cover, pricing, and release date, and you earn a much higher share of each sale. The tradeoff is that you’re responsible for quality, so you’ll need to invest in editing, design, and formatting.
For most first-time authors who want to publish on their own timeline, self-publishing is the faster and more practical choice. The rest of this guide focuses on that route.
Step 2: Edit Your Manuscript (Then Edit It Again)
Readers can forgive a lot, but they won’t forgive a book full of errors. Professional editing usually happens in stages:
- Developmental editing: looks at the big picture, including structure, pacing, plot, character, and argument.
- Copyediting: fixes grammar, consistency, word choice, and sentence flow.
- Proofreading: the final pass to catch typos and small mistakes before publication.
Tip: Put your manuscript aside for a week or two before revising. Fresh eyes catch problems you’d otherwise miss. Beta readers can also give you useful feedback before you hire an editor.
Step 3: Get a Professional Book Cover
Yes, people judge books by their covers, especially online, where your cover shows up as a small thumbnail next to dozens of others. A strong cover should:
- Match the conventions of your genre (thrillers, romance, and self-help covers all look very different)
- Have a title that’s easy to read at thumbnail size
- Look professional and polished, not homemade
You’ll need a front cover for your ebook. For a paperback or hardcover, you’ll need a full wraparound cover with a spine and back cover, sized to your page count and trim size.
Step 4: Format and Typeset Your Book
Formatting turns your manuscript into a properly laid-out book. Ebooks and print books need different formats:
- Ebook formatting: reflowable text that adjusts to different screen sizes, with a clickable table of contents.
- Print formatting (typesetting): fixed layouts with the right trim size, margins, fonts, headers, page numbers, and chapter openings.
Poor formatting is one of the most common signs of an amateur self-published book. Uneven spacing, odd fonts, or bad page breaks can pull readers out of the story.
Step 5: Get Your ISBN
An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique identifier for your book. Each format, such as paperback, hardcover, or ebook, usually needs its own.
- Amazon KDP offers a free ISBN for paperbacks, but it lists KDP as the publisher.
- If you want your own imprint name listed as the publisher, buy ISBNs from your country’s official ISBN agency (for example, Bowker in the U.S.).
- Kindle ebooks don’t require an ISBN on KDP.
Step 6: Write a Compelling Book Description
Your book description is your sales pitch. It should:
- Hook readers in the first line
- Introduce the main conflict or promise of the book without giving away the ending
- End with a reason to buy now
Also pick keywords and categories carefully. They help readers find your book when they search on Amazon and other stores.
Step 7: Publish and Distribute
Now it’s time to upload your book. Popular platforms include:
- Amazon KDP: the biggest marketplace for ebooks and print-on-demand paperbacks and hardcovers.
- IngramSpark: wide print distribution to bookstores and libraries.
- Draft2Digital: easy ebook distribution to Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and more.
You’ll upload your formatted interior and cover files, enter your book details, set your price, and choose your territories. Always order a proof copy of your print book before going live so you can check the cover, layout, and print quality yourself.
Step 8: Market Your Book
Publishing is only the beginning. To reach readers:
- Build a simple author website and email list
- Share your journey on social media
- Ask early readers for honest reviews
- Consider Amazon ads or promotional deals
- Reach out to book bloggers and podcasts in your genre
